Mars and Agreena announce supply chain partnership
Agreena is partnering with Mars, Incorporated – a global leader in pet care products and services, confectionery, snacking and food, and the maker of some of the world’s most-loved brands – to support a shift to regenerative agriculture in Hungary.
Mars is working to scale climate-smart agriculture in its value chain, which will help to deliver more than one million acres of regenerative agriculture practices across the globe by 2030. With almost 60% of the company’s value chain GHG footprint coming from agricultural ingredients, regenerative agriculture initiatives such as this are crucial for driving continued Scope 3 decarbonisation, as part of the Mars Net Zero Roadmap.
“Agreena is thrilled to be collaborating with Mars. There is a growing urgency to address greenhouse gas emissions, climate resilience and nature impacts in agricultural supply chains. This partnership will demonstrate the power of Agreena’s leading soil carbon programme to serve as a 'benefits bridge' – supporting Mars with its Scope 3 reduction goals and providing tangible rewards for farmers adopting sustainable farming practices,” said Frederik Aagaard, Chief Commercial Officer at Agreena.
Agreena and Mars will collaborate to provide financial incentives to eligible farmers adopting regenerative practices on up to 5,500 hectares of wheat crops in Hungary between 2024 and 2026.
Eligible farmers who join Agreena’s existing soil carbon programme will receive a guaranteed payment for the greenhouse gas emissions reduction and removals on their wheat fields. Farmers are also being offered advice on regenerative practices from another project partner, Biospheres, in order to support them with their transition.
Agreena has amassed deep experience in regenerative agriculture and built a network of thousands of farmers spanning 20 countries, so it is well positioned to engage farmers in client’s supply chains to achieve a mutually beneficial shift in sustainable practices. Using its advanced digital Measurement, Reporting and Verification (dMRV) approach – which includes field-level data collection, on-site farm visits, satellite imagery and soil carbon modelling – Agreena is able to provide incredibly accurate supply chain data that has huge value for food and drink companies.
