Weathering the storm: a year unlike any other
As another harvest draws closer, we look back on a tough year with extreme weather, falling commodity prices and sudden policy shocks. The complexity of managing a farming business in changing times and unpredictable weather situations is keeping many farmers, myself included, up at night.
Additional income is needed to secure resilience
But we all know that farming is more than just growing crops. It’s about being stewards of the land, protecting our soils for the next generation, and growing healthy food.
Healthy soils are the basis of a strong and profitable farming business, and finding additional income streams that support this is essential. I believe carbon markets can and will form part of this.
Progress in carbon markets provides a solution
Through carbon markets, you can access carbon credit buyers and supply chain opportunities. That is what Agreena has been pioneering and developing for many years. Carbon markets are still evolving and payment timelines aren’t always what farmers (or Agreena) would want, but we have made significant progress.
We are the first large scale soil carbon project to be registered with Verra, we have sold millions of euros of credits and made sophisticated supply chain deals.
We can now remote sense farming and cropping practices across entire countries at a low cost, and for the past 3 years, we have operated one of Europe's largest soil sampling programmes.
A growing network of farmers and buyers
With more than 2,300 farmers already working with Agreena, you’re not on the journey alone. Our network is bridging the gap between farmers and corporations wanting to support regenerative farming, and with buyers such as Radisson Hotel Group, farmers’ are already starting to get rewarded. Funding for these deals will flow to farmers once Verra credits are issued later this year.

Thomas Gent is the 4th generation on his family farm in South Lincolnshire. They have been farming regeneratively for around 15 years. Thomas has only ever farmed using regenerative principles and sees himself as part of the next generation of regenerative farmers. The family farm consists of around 800 ha of arable combinable cropping recently integrating more multi-year lays to diversify the rotation. Thomas founded the Gentle Farming brand to help sell his crops directly to companies looking to build a regenerative supply chain. He also works with carbon farming company Agreena to help farmers across Europe to transition to more regenerative practices.
